What to do about the rising threat of cyber attacks

Whether it’s ordering food, calling a taxi, or buying groceries – almost everything we do is now possible online. Businesses are increasingly going digital, and with work-from-home becoming a norm, it isn’t just the services sector that is turning to tech.

Yet, as we revel in the convenience that digital technology brings, the flip side is that we are also becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats.

News of cyber attacks abound across the world. For example, in early 2021, the Solarwinds Orion platform, used by government agencies and Fortune 500 companies across the globe was compromised by hackers. Malicious code was inserted into the software updates, giving them entry to any businesses that downloaded it.

Locally, security firm Certis found that 62,000 emails were caught in a phishing attack, leaking data with private information. In fact, in 2019, cyber crime rates in Singapore jumped by 50 percent and numbers are expected to rise.

Attacks are rising not just in frequency, but also in complexity. The need is clear: to thrive in the global world, businesses of all sizes must ramp up their cybersecurity capacities to protect both their operations, and their customers.
